How to Make Your Own Website

In this day and age where people are looking to make a living or make a quick buck online, having a presence is a key to that initial growth. This guide is for those with little to no idea how to make a website, great for those that need to make a portfolio or their small business look more professional. Since being a YouTuber is not for everyone, having your own channel or website is the perfect way to add to your tool belt or online resume other than social media. So follow along to know how to make your own website.

What do you need?

Making a website, in essence, just requires you to have your own domain, hosting, and WordPress. Although simpler methods are out there like using website builders, they limit you in some ways and just costs more. There’s nothing wrong with going with a website builder but this way you’ll learn the basics which you can build upon as you go.

By now, you’ve most likely been to many websites and noticed the link or address you use to go to their page and that’s their domain name. To put it simply, a domain name is the name of your website and the link your visitors use to find you. If we’re going to be more technical, a domain name is what we use instead of a combination of numbers since it’s much easier to remember.

Now domain names cost anywhere between five to 15 bucks annually and can be purchased on a number of places online. To make things easier, you can actually buy them along with your hosting package for a kind of a one-stop-shop. The best way to choose your domain name is as simple as using your name or business name and ending it with a “.com” since it’s easier to remember. Should you find that the domain name is already taken, add a word like “official” or “shop” in the end, whichever will be more appropriate to your site.

Another thing to keep in mind is adding privacy to your domain name. Since you’ll be attaching our contact details and address to this, visitors can look up the said details by going to or another site. The way to get around this is to pay just around two dollars a month to keep people from sending you spam emails or unwanted phone calls. Nevertheless, you can always use a secondary email and phone number as well to save a couple of bucks a month.

Web Hosting

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll be buying your domain name from your host and for the sake of this post, we’ll be going with InMotion. InMotion is an example of a web hosting service that allows anyone to host their page or website online. With a web hosting service, websites can be viewed anywhere in the world thanks to their servers in which all your website data is stored.

Web hosting prices vary on what you need and where you buy them. Their packages can range from five dollars to twenty dollars per month for individuals that can either have one or more or even unlimited domains hosted on their account. Check out InMotion (affiliate link) for relatively cheap prices. Especially if you’re going for long term, they even offer a free domain and a free SSL certificate upfront. If that’s not your thing, you can always use their monthly plan just at 19.99 a month, also with free domain and SSL certificate. Go ahead and pick your hosting package, it’s a lot easier than you think.

Just follow their steps and type in all your details needed and there you go! All that’s left is using WordPress.

You now have your domain and web hosting. What will WordPress do? Well, WordPress is a blogging and content management system which is the most reliable and most used worldwide. To give you a rough estimate, over half the websites you visit on a daily basis is most likely powered by WordPress.

To get started, your hosting service most likely has a dashboard that enables you to connect you to WordPress. Here, you can build on your website by coding, templates, or page builders. And here we’ll be going with page builders since it’s more user-friendly.

A couple of things to note is to always back-up your site before making major changes (your hosting should be able to help with this) and always previewing the changes before saving it to be on the safe side. WordPress is easy enough to understand, just get to know the interface and you’re good to go.

What’s next:

Congratulations! You now have everything you need to start a basic website. The last thing to do is use a template and theme and download the Elementor plugin to start building it up. Elementor is essentially a page builder and offers you an easy way to build your site. You can drag and drop elements and edit content to match what you need. If you’re confused, adding a home page, an about page, and a contact page should be a good way to start with.

WordPress themes are a whole topic altogether, what you should note is not all of them will work on your site and depends on what you have on your site that is compatible with them and the best way to change yours is to either preview it first or back-up your site beforehand so you can easily change it back should it cause your site to “break.”

Plugins are simply like apps that you can add to your site which can do a number of things on the back end or front. These vary from security upgrades, functionality, and more. If you’re looking to make an online shop, WooCommerce is great to start with. We’ll discuss that on another blog post. For updates on this, subscribe to our newsletter by clicking here.

We highly recommend trying it out for your business or even just for the sake of trying it. Learning something new is always a great thing to spice up your day.
